Podcast Trends 2027: Eight Shifts Backed by Data

By Kris Reid ·

The podcast trends for 2027 that the data actually supports are video catching up with audio, older listeners driving growth, ad revenue still rising, fewer new shows but more AI spam, and AI search needing transcripts. Each trend below rests on a measured series from Edison Research, IAB/PwC, YouTube, Spotify or Listen Notes, published between December 2025 and October 2026, with what it means for an agent’s show.

Most “trends” lists are opinions with a year swapped in the title. Nobody has 2027 data yet, so the honest approach is to take series that have been measured for several years and look at where they point. The Infinite Dial 2027, expected in spring 2027 if Edison keeps its usual schedule, will be the first check on these calls. For the underlying numbers in one place, see our podcast statistics for 2027.

The biggest podcast trends for 2027 are the eight shifts below, each tied to its data source.

Trend Measured evidence Source and date
1. Video and audio are even 78% of weekly consumers watch video, 80% listen audio-only Edison, Q1 2026
2. Podcasts move to the TV 700M+ hours on living room devices in Oct 2025, up from 400M YouTube, Dec 2025
3. Older listeners drive growth 55+ monthly consumption 21% (2023) to 44% (2026) Edison, Jan 2026 survey
4. Ad money keeps growing $2.9B in 2025, +17.6%; spend +23% in Q2 2026 IAB/PwC, Apr 2026; Magellan AI, Aug 2026
5. Host-read ads beat produced ads 3.22% vs 2.09% median response Magellan AI, Sept 2026
6. Fewer launches, more AI spam New shows fell from 1.02M (2020) to 211K (2025) Listen Notes, Oct 2026
7. AI is welcome backstage only 69% approve AI for research; 25% approve an AI-voiced host Edison, Q1 2026
8. AI search reads transcripts 57% of Americans 12+ have used a generative AI assistant Edison, Jan 2026 survey

Will video podcasts overtake audio in 2027?

Video podcasts have already drawn level with audio in the U.S., so 2027 is about running both, not picking one. Edison’s Podcast Consumer 2026 report shows video passing audio-only among weekly podcast consumers in Q3 2025 (82% against 78%), then slipping back behind in Q1 2026 (78% against 80%). In 2023, the split was 73% video against 89% audio-only.

What it means for an agent: record every episode on camera, even with a simple two-camera setup, and publish the audio to podcast apps as well. Our video podcast statistics show which platforms people use for each format.

Are people watching podcasts on TV?

People are watching podcasts on TV screens far more than they used to. YouTube’s December 2025 recap says viewers watched over 700 million hours of podcasts on living room devices in October 2025, up from 400 million hours a year before. Edison’s Q1 2026 data also shows 66% of weekly consumers listen most often at home, against 13% in a vehicle.

What it means for an agent: a TV viewer sees your face, your setting and your graphics on a big screen. A clean background and decent lighting matter more than a fancy microphone. The old idea that podcasts are mainly a commute habit no longer fits the data.

Who is the fastest-growing podcast audience?

Americans aged 55 and older are the fastest-growing podcast audience. Edison’s Infinite Dial 2026, a January 2026 survey of 2,050 Americans 12+, found monthly podcast consumption among those 55+ at 44%, up from 21% in 2023. The 35 to 54 group is now the most likely to consume podcasts at all, at 68%.

Some of that jump comes from Edison changing its question in 2025 to “listened to or watched,” which counts YouTube viewers who may not call themselves podcast listeners. Even so, 55+ rose from 38% to 44% between 2025 and 2026 on the same question.

What it means for an agent: sellers, downsizers and repeat buyers are exactly this age. Topics such as rightsizing, selling a long-held home and estate sales now have a real podcast audience.

Is podcast advertising still growing?

Podcast advertising is still growing faster than most of digital advertising. The IAB/PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report, published April 16, 2026, put U.S. podcast ad revenue at $2.9 billion in 2025, up 17.6%. The overall U.S. digital ad market grew 13.9%. Magellan AI’s Q2 2026 benchmarks found podcast ad spend up 23% year over year and 1,297 brands advertising on podcasts for the first time.

Measured performance favors the host’s own voice. Magellan’s Q2 2026 measurement benchmark report, covering January to June 2026 campaigns, found host-read ads had a 3.22% median response rate against 2.09% for produced spots.

What it means for an agent: more ad money means more shows looking for guests and sponsors, and a host who reads ads well has something to sell. Our breakdown of podcast advertising rates has the current rate cards.

Most of that money goes to large shows; see podcast revenue and income statistics.

Are fewer new podcasts launching?

Far fewer new podcasts are launching than at the 2020 peak, and a growing share of new feeds are AI-generated junk. Listen Notes, a podcast search engine, counted 1,020,468 new podcasts in 2020 and 211,038 in 2025 (data updated October 10, 2026). Of its 3.82 million total podcasts, about 568,000 have published an episode in 2026.

Listen Notes now reports how many AI-generated fake podcasts it removes. In September 2026 it logged 8,848 new human-created shows and removed 3,040 AI-generated fakes. Human-created launches fell from 20,249 in January 2026 to 8,848 in September.

What it means for an agent: the raw count of podcasts overstates your competition. A consistent, local, clearly human show stands out more in 2027 than it did in 2020.

How will AI change podcasting in 2027?

AI will change how podcasts are made more than who hosts them, because listeners are drawing a line. In Edison’s Q1 2026 data, 69% of weekly podcast consumers approved of AI for research, 69% for brainstorming and 60% for transcripts. Only 25% approved of a podcast hosted by an AI-generated voice, and 62% called AI a threat to podcasts’ credibility.

Platforms are pushing AI anyway. At its May 2026 Investor Day, Spotify introduced Personal Podcasts, which generate short private audio episodes from a listener’s prompt.

What it means for an agent: use AI for prep, show notes, transcripts and clip selection. Keep your own voice and face on the show. Trust is what a local agent’s podcast is selling.

Will AI search engines cite podcasts?

AI search tools can only cite what they can read, so podcasts with transcripts are in a better position. Edison’s January 2026 survey found 57% of Americans 12+ have used a generative AI assistant. Google’s guidance on AI features says there are no special requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and lists making important content available in textual form among its best practices.

An audio file alone gives a search engine very little. An episode page with a transcript, a summary and clear headings gives it text to match to questions. Our guide to how podcast guesting shows up in AI search covers this from the guest’s side.

What it means for an agent: publish every episode as a page on your site, with a transcript and an answer-first summary. If the production side is what stops you, you can plan your 2027 show with a real estate podcast team that handles editing, publishing and SEO-optimized website articles.

Frequently asked questions

Is podcasting still growing in 2027?

Yes, by the most recent measures. Edison's January 2026 survey found record U.S. reach: 58% of Americans 12+ consumed a podcast in the last month. IAB/PwC data shows podcast ad revenue rose 17.6% in 2025. The 2027 Infinite Dial will update the audience figures.

Is it too late to start a podcast in 2027?

No, and the competition is thinner than the raw totals suggest. Listen Notes counts over 3.8 million podcasts, but only about 568,000 have published in 2026. For an agent, the real competition is the handful of shows covering your city, which is often none.

Will AI replace podcast hosts?

Listeners say no for now. In Edison's Q1 2026 data only 25% of weekly podcast consumers approved of a podcast hosted by an AI-generated voice, while 69% approved of AI for research and brainstorming.
