How Much Do Podcasts Make? Podcast Revenue and Income Statistics
By Kris Reid ·
How much podcasts make depends on whether you mean the industry or one show. U.S. podcast advertising brought in $2.9 billion in 2025, according to IAB/PwC. Most individual shows earn little or nothing from ads, and no primary source measures typical creator income. For a real estate agent, the money a podcast makes is the commission from relationships it builds.
Pages ranking for this question mostly mix celebrity deal estimates with untraceable “small shows earn $X a month” claims. This page uses only figures published by the organizations that measured or paid them, with dates. Data is as of October 14, 2026; no 2027 revenue data exists yet. For audience figures, see the podcast statistics hub.
How much money does the podcast industry make?
The U.S. podcast industry made $2.86 billion in advertising revenue in 2025, up 17.6% from $2.43 billion in 2024, according to the IAB/PwC Internet Advertising Revenue Report published April 2026. Podcast ad revenue has grown every year since the report’s podcast series begins in 2015, and has quadrupled since $708.1 million in 2019.
| Revenue measure | Figure | Source and period |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. podcast advertising revenue | $2,862.2 million | IAB/PwC, full year 2025 |
| Growth from 2024 | +17.6% | IAB/PwC, full year 2025 |
| Paid by Spotify to podcast publishers and podcasters worldwide | More than $100 million | Spotify, Q1 2025 only |
| Weekly U.S. podcast consumers 13+ who gave money to support a podcast | 21% | Edison Podcast Metrics, Q2 2025 to Q1 2026 |
The IAB notes that its figure uses a traditional, audio-based definition of a podcast, so some video podcast ad money may be counted elsewhere. Spotify’s payout announcement from April 2025 covers ad revenue plus its Partner Program, and we found no newer total on Spotify’s newsroom. Edison’s figure comes from its Podcast Consumer 2026 report. CPM rate cards and the per-episode sponsorship math are in our guide to podcast advertising rates.
How much does an individual podcast make?
An individual podcast makes whatever its revenue streams pay, and no primary source publishes what a typical show earns. What is published is how each stream pays, which lets you estimate a show’s ceiling.
| Revenue stream | How it pays | Published terms (checked October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Host-read ads sold by CPM | Downloads × CPM ÷ 1,000 | Libsyn Ads: $18–$26 CPM for host-read spots, depending on length |
| Spotify Partner Program | 50% of revenue from Spotify-sold ads in your episodes, plus Premium video revenue | Apply after 3 episodes, 1,000 audience count and 2,000 consumption hours on Spotify in 30 days (Spotify) |
| Apple Podcasts subscriptions | Share of each subscription | 70% of the price, rising to 85% after a subscriber’s first paid year; an annual program fee applies (Apple) |
| YouTube Partner Program | Share of ad revenue on your videos | 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days (YouTube) |
| Listener support and memberships | Direct payments from fans | 21% of weekly podcast consumers gave money in the past year (Edison) |
| Flat-fee local sponsorships | Negotiated monthly or per-episode fee | No published benchmark |
Every one of these streams scales with audience size except the last. That is why the question matters so much for small shows.
How many podcasts make money?
No public dataset counts how many podcasts make money. The benchmarks that do exist suggest the share earning meaningful ad income is small. On Buzzsprout, a large host with 111,813 active podcasts, the median episode got 27 downloads in its first 7 days in September 2026.
Run that through the CPM formula and the result is clear. These are illustrative calculations, not quotes.
| First-week downloads per episode | Where that sits on Buzzsprout (Sept 2026) | One ad spot at $25 CPM |
|---|---|---|
| 27 | Median | $0.68 |
| 96 | Top 25% | $2.40 |
| 412 | Top 10% | $10.30 |
| 1,007 | Top 5% | $25.18 |
| 4,586 | Top 1% | $114.65 |
Even a top-1% show earns about $115 per spot per episode on first-week downloads at that rate. Ad income becomes a living only well above that line, which is why most “podcasters make six figures” stories are about a small group of very large shows. Our average podcast listeners benchmarks explain how these download numbers are counted.
Why do podcast income claims vary so much?
Podcast income claims vary because most of them aren’t measured. Figures for famous hosts usually come from press reports of licensing deals, not from audited revenue. Figures for “small” and “medium” shows usually come from blog estimates that don’t name a dataset.
Three questions sort useful numbers from noise:
- Who paid or measured it? IAB/PwC, a platform’s own payout announcement or a host’s rate card is evidence. “Experts estimate” isn’t.
- What period and market? The IAB figure is U.S. ad revenue for 2025; Spotify’s $100 million is worldwide, for one quarter.
- Is it revenue or profit? Ad revenue is shared with networks and platforms, and production costs come out before anyone takes home income.
How does a real estate podcast make money?
A real estate podcast makes money mainly through commissions: listeners who become clients, guests who become referral partners, and past clients who stay in touch because they hear you every week. Ads are a side income at best for a local show, because a local audience is small by definition.
The pattern behind that example is what the “commissions, not ads” argument rests on. The one client result we can cite comes from a partnership with Ardor SEO, not from podcast ads: Avery Carl’s company, The Short Term Shop, partnered with Ardor SEO, and its sales grew from $59 million in 2019 to $621 million in 2021. In her video testimonial, Avery Carl said working with Kris and the Ardor team plus hiring more agents to help handle the volume were “really the only two things that we did differently.” That figure is sales volume, not podcast revenue. You can read more real estate agents’ podcast results on the Icons success stories page.

What should an agent track instead of ad revenue?
An agent should track the business a podcast produces, because that is where its revenue shows up. Ad dashboards miss almost all of it.
- Inquiries that mention the show, by source (listener, guest, guest’s referral).
- Guests who have sent you a referral or introduced a client.
- Closed transactions where the client heard an episode before calling.
- Gross commission income tied to those transactions.
- Production cost and your hours per episode, so the comparison is honest.
If you want the show produced while you spend your time on the guests and the follow-up, look at Icons’ production plans for agents whose podcast pays in commissions rather than ad reads.

Frequently asked questions
How many podcasts make money?
No public dataset counts how many podcasts earn money. The available benchmarks suggest few do: the median Buzzsprout episode gets 27 downloads in its first week, and Spotify's Partner Program requires 1,000 audience count and 2,000 consumption hours on Spotify in 30 days just to apply.
How much do podcasts make per 1,000 downloads?
Libsyn Ads' published rate card lists host-read spots at $18 to $26 per 1,000 downloads, depending on length. That is the advertiser's price for one ad spot, before any network or platform takes its share.
Can a podcast make money without ads?
Yes. Apple Podcasts subscriptions pay creators 70% of the price, rising to 85% after a subscriber's first paid year. In Edison's 2026 data, 21% of weekly podcast consumers gave money to support a podcast in the past year. For agents, the main non-ad income is business from listeners.
