Average Podcast Episode Length and What Works for Real Estate Shows

By Kris Reid ·

The average podcast length is about 37 to 43 minutes per episode. WhichPodcast’s October 2026 analysis of 37,867 shows puts the median show at 37 minutes and the mean at 43. Business podcasts, the closest category to real estate, run shorter, with a median near 30 minutes. For agents, 10 to 15 minutes suits market updates and 25 to 40 minutes suits interviews.

Most articles answering this question quote a 2018 or 2019 study without saying so. The figures below say who measured episode length, how, and when, then turn the data into lengths for the three formats agents use most. All data is as of October 14, 2026. For audience and revenue figures, see the podcast statistics hub.

What is the average podcast episode length?

The average podcast episode length is 37 minutes for the typical show and 43 minutes as a mean across shows, according to WhichPodcast’s episode-length research, computed on October 14, 2026. WhichPodcast, a podcast discovery site, took the average episode length of each of 37,867 RSS podcasts in its index, then compared shows, giving each show one vote.

Measure (WhichPodcast, Oct 14, 2026) Length
Median show’s average episode 37 minutes
Mean across all shows 43 minutes
Middle 50% of shows 22 to 55 minutes
90th-percentile show 1 hour 14 minutes
Median episode, counting every episode (14.4 million) 29 minutes
Mean episode, counting every episode 39 minutes

Two limits matter. WhichPodcast builds its index from Apple Podcasts, Listen Notes and direct RSS feeds, and says Apple-listed shows are over-represented, and YouTube-only podcasts aren’t included. It also relies on the duration each feed declares. Its page headline says podcasts are getting shorter, but its own year-by-year chart shows the median show at 37 minutes in 2006 and 38 minutes in 2025, so the fair reading is that length has been roughly flat.

Why do average podcast length figures disagree?

Average podcast length figures disagree mainly because of what gets counted: shows or episodes. A daily news bulletin publishing hundreds of three-minute episodes a year drags an episode-weighted average down, while a show-weighted average counts it once.

Study Sample Median Mean Data date
WhichPodcast, each show counted once 37,867 shows 37 min 43 min October 2026
WhichPodcast, each episode counted 14.4 million episodes 29 min 39 min October 2026
Pacific Content, all episodes 10 million audio episodes 38 min 42 s 43 min 24 s October 2018
Pacific Content, Apple Top 400 shows Top 400 shows 47 min 30 s 53 min 4 s October 2018

The Pacific Content study is the one most pages quote, often without its 2018 date. It also shows the other main driver: chart-topping shows run longer than the field. Long-form interview and comedy shows build audiences around length; most shows don’t need to.

How long are most podcast episodes?

Most podcast episodes run 20 to 40 minutes, the single largest band on Buzzsprout, a large podcast host that publishes monthly platform stats. In September 2026, the split across episodes published on Buzzsprout looked like this, next to the same month in previous years:

Episode length (Buzzsprout) Sept 2024 Sept 2025 Sept 2026
Under 10 minutes 18% 18% 20%
10 to 20 minutes 15% 16% 16%
20 to 40 minutes 31% 31% 31%
40 to 60 minutes 21% 20% 20%
Over 60 minutes 15% 14% 13%

Buzzsprout hosted 111,813 active podcasts in September 2026, many of them small independent shows. That makes it a better mirror of an agent’s show than a chart-based sample, but it is still one host’s customers. The trend over two years is a slight drift toward shorter episodes, not a big change.

How long are business and real estate podcasts?

Business podcasts have a median of about 30 minutes per episode, in WhichPodcast’s October 2026 genre breakdown of 486 Business shows. Apple Podcasts has no real estate category, so an agent show has to choose another one, and Business with its subcategories, such as Investing or Marketing, is the closest fit.

Genre (WhichPodcast, Oct 2026) Median show length Shows in sample
Comedy 55 min 685
Interviews 38 min 1,277
Business 30 min 486
Education 27 min 567
News 23 min 464

Real estate shows sit right there too: in our study of 12,065 real estate podcasts, the median active real estate show averaged 30.4 minutes per episode in October 2026. The useful benchmark is the genre your show is filed under and the format it uses, not the catalog-wide average.

What length works for a real estate podcast?

The right length for a real estate podcast is set by the format and the listener’s situation, not the industry average. A seller deciding whether to list wants the answer fast; a relocating buyer bingeing episodes about a new town will give you longer. These ranges are our recommendations, informed by the data above, not measured results.

Format Suggested length Why
Weekly market update 8 to 15 minutes One job: what changed this week and what it means. Fits a short drive.
Local interview (business owner, lender, inspector) 25 to 40 minutes Matches the Business and Interviews medians; enough time for real stories.
Solo explainer (one buyer or seller question) 10 to 20 minutes One question, answered fully. Easy to clip and to link from a listing page.
Neighborhood tour with a resident guest 30 to 45 minutes Relocation listeners give more time when the topic is their next home.

Whatever the length, give each episode its own page on your website; our episode page template for agent websites shows the layout.

Does podcast episode length affect how many people finish?

Podcast episode length affects how many people finish, but no public dataset gives completion rates by length across shows. What the platforms do publish is how they define a listener who stuck around. Apple’s listener analytics count an “engaged listener” as someone who listened to or watched at least 20 minutes or 40% of an episode.

That definition favors shorter, tighter episodes. A listener who plays 12 minutes of a 25-minute market update has passed 40%; the same 12 minutes of a 60-minute episode hasn’t. Check the average consumption figure for each episode in Apple Podcasts Connect after 8 to 10 episodes, and cut length where most listeners stop. For what your download counts mean once you have them, see our average podcast listeners benchmarks.

If you’d rather someone else handle the editing and keep each episode to a sensible length, Icons’ ongoing production service handles editing, publishing and promo clips for agent shows. And if you’re still deciding whether a show is worth starting, our count of how many podcasts are actually active shows how thin local competition usually is.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a podcast be?

As long as the content holds attention, and no longer. The data gives a starting range: the middle half of shows average 22 to 55 minutes per episode, and Business shows sit near 30. For an agent, 10 to 15 minutes suits a market update and 25 to 40 minutes suits an interview.

Is a 10-minute podcast too short?

No. About 20% of Buzzsprout episodes in September 2026 ran under 10 minutes. Short formats work when the episode has one clear job, such as a weekly market update or a single neighborhood question.

Is a one-hour podcast too long?

Not for every show. About 13% of Buzzsprout episodes ran over 60 minutes in September 2026, and WhichPodcast's 90th-percentile show averages 1 hour 14 minutes. For a local real estate show, an hour usually means the edit was skipped.
