Understanding SEO
When you are running a business, do your potential clients find you on Google? If you are not sure about this, then you might have taken the wrong steps in optimising your site. This is where innovative, but simple-to-understand SEO should c ome in. With it, you can slowly, but surely, correct your strategy and give your site better rankings.
The podcast begins with Kris explaining what SEO should be. He stated:
“It’s what you do to really help Google understand what your website is and, well, convince them that you are the authority in that marketplace, and now you should rank higher than your competitors.”
One of the most important aspects of SEO is getting the right keywords. Basically, keywords convince that your website is the authority of the niche you are in. According to Kris, understanding what your users are looking for and using the right keywords to cater to this need is crucial in building your SEO plan.
Aside from keywords, it is also important to know the many search parameters that Google looks at to determine how your site should rank. These include metadata, title tags, descriptions, on-page content, internal and external links, site speed, mobile-friendliness, the HTTPS, and lots more.
When asked about what beginners should focus on when building a good SEO strategy, Kris emphasises “user experience”. He said that Google would love a site that loads fast, especially on mobile. He also said that website owners should get their content concise.
To illustrate, he said, “If you are a plumber, you should tell people about how great you are at fixing toilets in a layman’s term and think of what the actual end-users want to see.
“They care about you do a good job, and, you know, Mrs. Smith down the road really likes your work. That’s the sort of things that are more important to the user experience.”
After all, Google’s business is trying to give users the best experience that they can have when searching solutions to their problems on the net, so you should take some steps to let Google know that you are there to help.
Aside from site speed and concise content, Kris adds that links are also a very important factor in performing better on search engine results pages (SERPs). In particular, backlinks will show Google that you are an authority in your niche. By having lots of other sites talking about you and linking back to your site, he said that it would make an impression that you are really trusted in what you do.
Letting People Know That You Exist
With regards to letting Google and your users know that you are there, Kris emphasises the importance of content. Not only that you have to write articles, but you should make sure they are fresh and relevant. Of course, you should also make an effort to ensure people get to read or use them.
So what are the best ways to deliver content for your site, according to Kris?
1. Build partnerships. This means that if you are an expert in something, you can work with others engaged in it to deliver more helpful information to your audience.
Take this example from Kris: If you are a plumber, you are an expert in your field. So, maybe you can work with a home improvement site and, as a guest blogger, provide an article about the best way to select fixtures for your bathroom. This way, you will have higher chances of directing readers to your site, through linking, in particular, while offering something that is really helpful to them.
2. Make sure your pages are indexed by Google. This means that you should always build your website with SEO in mind. However, you should make sure best practices are observed and everything is relevant. Otherwise, Google will not regard your site as authoritative. This would include using descriptions and title tags that are truly relevant to the content you are creating. As Kris shares:
“If you have something compelling, that’s what people will click on.
“And if you are getting more clicks because you got the coolest title tags, then you will start going up in the rankings as well.”
On Searching “Site: Domain Name”
Before closing the interview, Kris shared one last great tip. Specifically, he suggests adding a keyword to “site:domain name” to know which of your site’s pages are relevant to the keywords that you have. This also gives you an idea of what improvements you need to make to better your site’s ranking on Google. And again, he stressed the importance of linking, specifically using internal links.
